Předobrazem jeho druhého celovečeráku je komiks Franka Millera, zachycující bitvu u Thermopyl z pohledu spartského krále Leonida a jeho vojáků. V srpnu 480 př. n. l. se třísethlavý oddíl postavil desetitisícům nepřátel, aby obsazením strategické soutěsky oddálil perskou invazi do ?ecka. Podobně jako Rodriguezovo Sin City se i Snyderův film natáčel kompletně před zeleným pozadím a ‚exteriéry‘ vznikaly až v počítačích. „Měli jsme to o něco těžší“, říká Snyder. „Přece jen, v Sin City je jedna cihlová budova vedle druhé. My museli vytvořit celá pohoří, moře, bitevní pláně…“ I tentokrát jsou mnohé záběry věrnou replikou políček z komiksu – a tak byť. ‚Třístovka‘ nespoléhá na áčkové hvězdy, už jen kvůli výtvarnému provedení nepůjde o jednu z největších filmových událostí jara. navíc tu už dlouho nebyl film, jenž by překypoval čirou ‚macho‘ energií a hrdiny, kteří na výhružku o mracích nepřátelských šípů, které zakryjí slunce, s klidnou tváří odpovědí: „Pak budeme bojovat ve stínu…“ […]
